Identifying Common Household Insects
It can be difficult to identify the type of insect or other pest you’re seeing scurrying or flying around your home. The best way to find out what kind of pest you’ve got is to follow these steps:
- Get a visual. Take a photo if you can, the closer the better.
- Are you finding droppings or dark-colored smudges or smears? That may be a clue to what type of pest is in your home. Take note or snap a photo of what you’re seeing
- Where are you seeing them? The location of the markings, the discarded insect exoskeletons, or the live bugs is a major clue. For example, are they in the pantry in your dry goods, on your mattress, in your carpet, or crawling into cracks in your walls?
- Call Hawx Pest Control. Our experts will help you identify and learn about the pests on your property, then treat the underlying problem.
Does a Clean House Keep Pests Away?
Regular cleaning goes a long way toward discouraging most pests from taking up residence in your home. Wipe up spills immediately, store food in airtight containers, and empty trash cans before they overflow. Vacuuming floors, rinsing recyclables, and clearing pet dishes at night remove easy food sources that attract all types of bugs such as ants, rodents, cockroaches, pantry moths, and flies.
Why am I seeing bugs in my house all of a sudden?
There are a ton of different factors at play. A sudden spike in pest activity often follows changes in weather patterns, renovation work on your home, or seasonal shifts that drive pests indoors in search of food and shelter. Even small actions like leaving doors ajar, bringing firewood inside, or overwatering indoor plants can attract certain types of pests. Once a few bugs find easy access and resources, pheromones and food scraps can encourage an entire population to move in.
How to figure out where bugs are coming from
Start by inspecting common entry points: gaps around windows and doors, torn screens, utility line penetrations, cracks in your foundation, etc. You should also trace pest “highways” such as baseboard edges or plumbing lines for insect droppings or shed skins. Outdoors, look for overgrown vegetation, leaking hose spigots, or clutter against the house. Document your findings so your Hawx pest control expert can match the evidence to the right treatment plan.
